From Anita the Beekeeper to Kiran the Junkyard Dealer, every Girl Stars book, movie and poster is a magical and real celebration of what it means for girls to be able to use their education to transform their lives.
The Making of Girl Stars
While making ‘Going to School in India,’ we found that the children most at risk of dropping out of school were girls. We realized we didn’t have inspiring stories of what girls in India could do by going to school—we needed new role model stories.
So we held workshops with girls in five states, to discover: Who is a ‘girl star’?
Across slums and villages girls age 10-16 told us: A girl star is someone who takes the bus (by herself!). If she’s really cool, she rides a scooter. She supports her family. She may have dropped out of school, but went back on her own and tried again. She paid for her brother’s education. Somehow, she manages to do it all – but she’s never really been lucky, she’s achieved what she has through hard work and persistence.
