Going to School’s journey began with the children’s book ‘Going to School in India’—a celebration of what school can be, from going to school in a tent in the middle of a mud desert to going to school in the dark. Each story features a real school in India where children come together to learn lessons that are relevant to their lives.
Going to School in India was adapted into 10 Mini Books and
9 movies in regional languages.
The Making of Going to School in India
Lisa Heydlauff and Nitin Upadhye traveled for a year across India—by plane, train, rickshaw and climbing up mountains—to discover more than 25 inspiring stories of children going to school.
The 144-page book was published by Penguin Books in India, Charlesbridge in USA and republished by Random House
in India. The success of the book proved that there are inspiring stories of schools in India—not just stories of failure—and that beautiful books can bring about change in children’s lives.
